List Prices and Discounts for Used IT Hardware

“What is your ‘list price’ for this used IBM Server?”

We get this type of question pretty frequently, particularly when we’re selling to a large Fortune 500 Corporation, University or Government Organization. It is almost a knee-jerk reaction to ask as these buyers are conditioned to negotiate discounting directly with manufacturers such as Sun, IBM, HP and EMC. We also get similar questions regarding “educational” or “volume discounts.”

While used IT hardware is a fantastic way to save on IT infrastructure costs, negotiating pricing here can present some unique challenges.

Why Listen to a Remarketer?

You want updates on the latest systems and trends. You might wonder - “Why should I heed the words and opinions of a used IT hardware remarketer? They sell equipment from two to three years ago, right?”

I can see where you’re coming from, but the myth that we only sell museum-ready systems is exactly that: a myth. You would be surprised at how quickly the latest models hit our docks. We’re typically stocking servers, routers and storage hardware two weeks to two months after a product is launched. There is more to this question than recency though.
