The Cisco 7500 Series strategic scalability lies in a distributed architecture using Versatile Interface Processors (VIPs). Each VIP has its own processor, which is able to switch IP data packets and deliver network services. Using the processing abilities of both the VIP and the Cisco Express Forwarding (CEF), these routers can surpass two million packets per second.
