@flyddw they user their own vmfs file system. We run virt RH & 2003R2 servers on it. Got 23 running on 3 hp dl360 servers.

Seems like my problem was in the fact that not all ESXes were updated to ESX 3.5 Update4 and also the VC needed to be updated to Update 4.

VMWare on HP DL360 G6
I recently acquired a couple of decently configured HP DL360 G6 servers. Each boots VMWare directly from an embedded USB Token.
