HP DL580 Server Review Loads of expansion, storage space and plenty of dependability, the HP DL580 might have grown old over time but it still continues to help small to medium sized businesses. Intel's Xeon 7300 series powers this baby and it is definitely way better than the AMD's Barcelona Opteron processors that was seen during the time of the launch of the DL580. Basically this chipset helped tip the scales further in the side of HP making the ProLiant DL580 G5 an awesome server with a classy spec sheet and a completely revamped chassis.

The Design In the DL580 G4 model, you can see the front panel hosting a pair of large hot-plug supplies but in the new generation this has been completely replaced with the bay moving to the rear and coming with four really compact 1200 Watt supplies.

What this has done is free up the space to the front with a full width drawer present at the bottom that contains separate MBs holding their own processors and memory sockets. The entire unit can also be easily removed simply by pressing a clip to the top that releases a handle.

Locking plates present to either side of the drawer helps keep the entire unit hinged so that it doesn't slide out or fall down when the drawer is depressed. As for the memory and processor, they are protected by a single cover, easy to remove.

The processor for instance is further protected by a heatsink and found together with four DIMM sockets directly behind it. The basic configuration for the HP DL580 includes 8GB or memory that can be easily expanded to 128GB if one uses a memory expander card. The total number of slots this makes available is 32.

Considering the Xeon X7350 quad core design that operates at 2.93GHz, HP DL580 actually retails at a decent price tag. Remember that the X7350 is actually a higher end Xeon processor that operates at around 130W whereas all other members of this Xeon family has a native operation power bandwidth of 80W. In the front, there is a standard 5.25 inch device bay on top of which lies the DVD-Rom drive and a compact HP Insight Display.

This pop-up panel provides status display on every single critical component so that you can see the status or failure list immediately without having to access any web browser or whatsoever. As for standard storage options, users continue to get a decent offering with large hot-swap bays to the right side that holds together SFF SAS/SATA hard drives.

A little more room is also available to grow and this is because of the blanking plate in the middle that can be further replaced with another eight-disk drive bay. If you wish to add another RAID card you can do so to the backplane. Doing this tends to maximize the interal storage density of the DL580 making it the largest among all 4U Xeon MP servers.

The chassis too features plenty of unique innovations such as the 12cm large hot-swap fans arranged as couplets in three across the entire width. However, this doesn't add to the noise levels which are more than satisfactory.

With an expansion option to the back, one can add in a daughter card with 8 PCI express slots and yet more option to fit in three additional PCI-E 8x or PCI-X slots. Moving on, the vertical boards are present to the right with the embedded RAID controller and serial, USB, video, network, PS/2 ports on the rear panel.

Network connections for the HP DL580 are controlled by a single pair of Broadcom Gigabit controllers that also come with TOE or TCP offload engine for greater iSCSI operations.

The Additional Features If you were to compare the IBM xSeries servers that are direct competitors of the DL580 you will find that the HP delivers far superior RAID options. Take for instance, IBM's support for just 32MB cache whereas the HP delivers around 512MB cache, key array type support (including RAID6) with battery backup pack.

Power consumption showed that when all four supplies are used, it registers around 360 Watts in idle and pushing all cores above 90 percent ratio powers out a 690 Watt demand. Compare this to the Transtec 4200 servers and you may feel that the HP DL580 is too power hungry but then again it is also powered by top end Xeon 7300 series processors.

Using the System Management homepage from HP, you can manage everything about the server directly from a browser window helping view installed component status and their current capacity.

Since the HP DL580 comes with the Systems Insight Manager suite, you know it also offers remote alerting, monitoring and management. Even the iLO2 comes as standard with the DL580 for remote browser interface and complete control.

The Verdict HP ProLiant servers have always set the standard for other companies to adhere with and the DL 580 is one such server from the stables of HP. Excellent management facilities, good overall value for price and an innovative design continues to make it easy to access and expand even today.
