Dell PowerEdge R620 Product Review

The PowerEdge R620 is probably the best designed server of the Dell lineup, and is now available with a whole lot more processing power and features. Although the is designed exclusively to tackle virtualization tasks, it does make a great fit for companies running workgroup and HPC applications.

With support for the entire family of E5-2600 Xeon CPU’s, the PowerEdge R620 boasts high memory capacity, and can be had with an optional memory card controller. This SD card fits has a dedicated slot at the rear of the chassis, where is stores the primary boot media to be used in an event of a failure.

The third chassis of the PowerEdge R620 can be fitted with four SFF bays and two PCI Express Flash SSD’s, which are available in 350 GB and 175 GB capacities. In terms of RAID options, the Dell PowerEdge R620 is appointed with a PERC S110 controller, which supports mirrors, RAID 5 and stripes and up to 4 SATA hard drives.

This controller snaps into its dedicated slot located towards the rear of the PowerEdge R620. The lid of the Dell PowerEdge R620 reveals a cunning and smart design, with not an iota wasted. The backplane of the drive is directly linked with cable to a eight port SAS connector, which sits right next to the RAID card.

The heatsinks in the Dell PowerEdge R620 are located on the sockets of the processor totaling 24 DIMM slots. Cooling in the PowerEdge R620 is taken care of by seven compact fan modules, so you can be rest assures that this does nothing more than whisper.
