Dell R710 Server Review:

The Dell PowerEdge r710 gives its close rival – the HP ProLiant DL 380 a run for its money and for many reasons starting with its stellar design, unique Lifecycle controller and plethora of expansion options. The Lifecycle controller is a small black box affixed on the motherboard of the Dell PowerEdge r710 and features 1 GB of VRAM memory.

The r710 can be booted directly with this controller by selecting the option from the boot menu. The Dell PowerEdge r710 boasts the revamped IRDAC6 controller, which has a dedicated network port at the rear of the system.

The management console of the Dell PowerEdge r710 is upgraded form the older version, and now includes a suite of tools to manage your IT equipment and not just the server. Although the installation process may seem a bit lengthy, once stared quickly populates the database with a list of SNMP enabled devices and discovered systems.

The PowerEdge r710 is designed with reduced power consumption in mind, and is ready to get started right out of the box. In terms of OS deployment, the PowerEdge r710 scores high yet again with the built in deployment wizard, which allows to simply enter your details and choose your operating system when prompted.

Other brands of servers such as HP and IBM still require you to use their conventional ServerGuide and SmartStart discs to access the operating system deployment tools. The Altris agent provides enhanced system monitoring, inventory, extensive alerting facilities and management capabilities.

Plenty of RAID options are onboard the Dell PowerEdge r710 such a battery backup unit and 256MB of embedded cache kitted out with a PERC 6/i controller.

Vibrant offers complete configurations as well as individual parts and upgrades for this model.
